Everything you need to know about the AmberMat

When it comes to underfloor heating, efficiency, reliability and simplicity are essential. The AmberMat, one of our electric underfloor heating solutions here at Amber Underfloor Heating, ticks all these boxes!

Whether the project involves retrofitting a commercial building or adding underfloor heating to a new-build kitchen, the AmberMat is the ideal solution.

If you’re looking to stock the AmberMat – or want some extra information about the product for your customers – this guide contains everything you need to know about the product, including its features, benefits and top tips for installation.

What is the AmberMat?

The AmberMat is one of the electric underfloor heating products we supply here at Amber Underfloor Heating.

It consists of a strong, self-adhesive mat which features a series of attached heating cables woven together.

With a thickness of just 4mm, it features a 360° fully screened twin conductor, encompassed within a tough yellow PVC outer sheath (non-UV stable).

It is manufactured to conform to all EU standards and has a 20 Year SecureFloor Warranty for complete peace of mind.

There are two types of AmberMat:

100W/m2

The 100W/m2 is the ideal solution for helping to warm a room and take the chill off of floors, but is better used as a secondary heating source.

150W/m2

The 150W/m2 mat has a more powerful output, so is ideal for use as a primary heating source, but can be used as a secondary heating source too.

How does the AmberMat work?

The mat is connected to the mains electricity which power the heating cables, warming them up so they radiate an even heat to the floor covering above.

It can be used as primary heating, or alongside a traditional heating source as secondary heating.

What type of project is the AmberMat suitable for?

Electric underfloor heating – including the AmberMat – is well-suited to a wide range of projects.

A versatile heating solution, it’s ideal for new-build constructions and renovations projects, but are typically more popular for retrofits as the system requires minimal floor build-up and causes less disruption.

While the AmberMat is typically used in bathrooms and kitchens where hard floor coverings like tile or stone are present, it can also be used in both large and small rooms with minimal obstacles.

What flooring can the AmberMat be used with?

The AmberMat is suitable for use with most floor coverings.

Tile and stone are often the most popular choice for use with the AmberMat as they are the most thermally conductive and retain heat well. Timber and vinyl flooring are also top choices as they are typically thinner, so the warmth from the underfloor heating permeates the floor well.

Carpet is also suitable for use with the AmberMat, but it is recommended that the carpet and underlay doesn’t exceed 2.5 tog. If a carpet is too thick, the floor will be too well insulated to feel the heat coming through, reducing the efficiency of the underfloor heating system.

Thermally restrictive items, such as rugs or bean bags, should not be used with underfloor heating as this could trap heat, reducing air flow and causing failures with the system.

How do you install the AmberMat?

Installing the AmberMat is a simple process during which the product can be rolled out following adequate planning and preparation.

Our top tips for installing the AmberMat are:

  1. Create a plan of the heated area prior to installation, ensuring the mats are spread evenly and avoid any obstructions. Make sure to plan the location of the cold tail.
  2. Carry out regular testing throughout installation, consulting the AmberMat installation guide to ensure correct measurements. Using a multimeter, test both continuity and insulation on the cables.
  3. Prepare the subfloor in accordance with the chosen floor covering, ensuring any insulation is even, stable, dry and free from any debris.
  4. When fitting the mat, place the cold tail near the connection point before beginning to roll out the mat.
  5. Once fitting is complete, measure the resistance of the mat again, using a multimeter.
  6. Once the floor covering has been installed, ensure the flooring is left for 8 to 10 days so it has dried completely before being connected to the thermostat and turned on.

What thermostats can be used with the AmberMat?

There are many thermostats compatible for use with the AmberMat.

Here at Amber, we have a range of thermostats to suit each project.

Our Amber DT-two thermostat is fully programmable, with frost protection, holiday mode and a floor temperature limiting function, helping users get the best from their electric underfloor heating mats.

Our Amber DT-two+ thermostat goes even further, with the convenience of Wi-Fi connectivity and smart home integration for easy and customisable comfort.

What are the benefits of the AmberMat?

Easy to install

The AmberMat is very easy to install.

Compared to wet underfloor heating systems or even electric underfloor heating cables, the AmberMat can be quicker and simpler to install as the mats can essentially be rolled out and secured with their self-adhesive backing.

Energy efficient

Like most electric underfloor heating systems, the AmberMat is very energy efficient.

It runs at a lower temperature than a traditional radiator and boiler system, meaning it takes less time to heat up and can reduce energy consumption, making it more energy efficient overall. When paired with smart thermostats, the efficiency can be boosted even further!

Even heat distribution

While traditional radiators heat the air nearest to them – often leading to cold spots – the AmberMat uses radiant heating. This means that it warms the floor covering which evenly distributes the heat to warm the whole room from the ground up.
